Renewable energy

The clean energy transition can redress past injustices and restore Traditional Owners to their rightful place as decision-makers on Country.

The multi-billion-dollar renewable energy transition will radically and rapidly transform Victoria’s landscape and economy.

This presents Traditional Owners with a unique set of risks and opportunities.

With the right legislative and regulatory settings, we can ensure Traditional Owners are central in planning, decision-making, and cultural heritage protection relating to renewable projects, and receive their fair share of benefits generated from their Country’s resources – setting communities up for economic prosperity.

The opportunity

Victoria’s renewable energy targets are ambitious: by 2035, 95 per cent of energy will come from renewable sources, and four gigawatts – three million homes’ worth – of power generated by offshore wind. The clean energy transition is happening at breakneck pace, and Traditional Owners must be central to ensure it happens in the right way.

Traditional Owner groups must be resourced to ensure they have the capacity to engage with the renewable energy sector, make the most of opportunities, and protect Country.

The Federation’s role

We bring Traditional Owner groups together to ensure their rights are recognised and their voices heard by:

  • connecting Traditional Owners with experts, decision-makers, industry stakeholders and each other
  • facilitating Traditional Owner participation in the renewable energy sector
  • advocating for Traditional Owner interests and priorities directly with decision-makers.
